TikTok Music Expands to 3 New Countries with AI Features

TikTok’s long-awaited music streaming service TikTok Music is finally expanding beyond beta and launching with some exciting new AI features. TikTok Music is now available in Australia, Singapore, and Mexico after initially launching in Brazil and Indonesia.

TikTok Music has licensing deals with Sony Music and Warner Music in all its territories so far, providing a catalog of major label music. However, Universal Music Group has not yet signed on for the new countries. TikTok said it remains in “active discussions” to add Universal’s catalog.

Ole Obermann, Global Head of Music Business Development and IP Rights at TikTok’s parent company ByteDance, said: “TikTok Music will make it easy for people to save, download and share their favorite viral tracks from TikTok. We are excited about the opportunities TikTok Music presents for both music fans and artists.”

What is TikTok Music?

TikTok Music is a premium music streaming service from the short video app. It offers on-demand streaming, downloads, and personalized recommendations.

What makes it unique is its deep integration with TikTok. It can auto-sync your favorite TikTok songs to your library and allows commenting on music. Users can connect TikTok accounts and see friends’ music activity.

Key features include:

  • Personalized recommendations based on TikTok activity
  • Discover emerging artists
  • Real-time lyrics for singing along
  • Collaborative playlists
  • Import playlists from other services
  • Identify songs with audio recognition

New AI Features

The launch brings new AI features like Party It and FYP Tuning. Party It creates a shared listening session tuned to the group’s tastes. FYP Tuning is a swipeable carousel of moods to find the perfect vibe.

Most exciting is Tonik, a discovery tool powered by ChatGPT. Users can give Tonik prompts like “find me happy indie pop songs from 2022” and it will instantly generate playlists. There are also AI-generated “stories behind the music” that answer questions about songs and artists.

The addition of these new territories and AI features shows TikTok is serious about competing in music streaming. Leveraging its massive user base and content, TikTok Music aims to tailor recommendations and discovery like no other service. It will be interesting to see how the music industry responds as TikTok Music expands worldwide.
